What you’re in for

Llanidloes to Glasbury, 46 miles down the Wye through Rhayader and Builth Wells to the edge of the Black Mountains, on day four of the Wales end to end. National Cycle Route 8 the whole way bar the first mile out of town. Llanidloes to Glasbury: 74.5km, with eight checkpoints on the way. It is day 4 of the Wales end to end, and you can run it on its own or as part of the whole. The upper Wye is one of the quietest valleys in Wales and the route follows it most of the day, rolling rather than mountainous. Mount to Coast rules apply on the single day as on the series: preset cut-offs based on a minimum 4 mph average, a warning the first time you fall below it, and no one on the course after ten at night. Checkpoints roughly every eight miles, a tracker with an SOS button, and maps and GPX for entrants only — bring a map case.

Terrain and trail

National Cycle Route 8 — Lôn Las Cymru — the whole way, which means traffic-free cycle path, old railway and quiet lane, hard-surfaced almost throughout. Road shoes, as the organiser supplies. The difficulty is the distance and the hills of mid-Wales, not the ground.
