The course

What you’re in for

Seven miles by head torch off the Sutton Bank edge on Halloween night. A one-distance Hardmoors evening race along the escarpment above the White Horse and back through the forest, starting at seven. It is 13.1km with 344m of climb, so the seven miles is closer to eight and the climb is the escarpment steps. Same rules as the rest of the series: unmarked, navigate yourself, full kit.

Terrain and trail

Firm edge path on top, steep stepped descents and climbs on the escarpment, forest track between — in the dark, with October leaf-fall over the roots. A good head torch with spare batteries, a trail shoe with grip, and know the route before you start; there is no tape to follow. Hardmoors 26.2 races are not taped or signed. You navigate yourself from the route description and map they publish — printed, in a freezer bag, because the kit check at registration looks for them — and a GPX on a watch is a back-up, not a substitute. Cup-free at the checkpoints and the finish. Full mandatory kit carried for the whole race, and the organiser's line on the moors is worth repeating: do not underestimate them.
