What you’re in for
Stonor Park by head torch, in November, on the same day as the daytime Oxfordshire Trail. The routes leave the 850-year-old manor house and its deer park and climb into the Chiltern beech woods, with gradients the organiser puts at 22% in places — the same hills as the day race, in the dark. The Short is 7.1km with 96m of climb, the Middle 12.8km and 305m, the Long 16.7km and 400m. Fully marked, with an outpost on the longer routes.
Terrain and trail
Chalk and flint bridleway, beech-wood single-track and estate parkland, muddy in November and steep enough that the descents need your attention with a head torch. The Long at 400m of climb is a proper hill race for its length. A good head torch and a trail shoe with grip. Maverick's format on every event: a fully marked course, outposts stocked with Precision Fuel & Hydration and a spread of sweet and savoury food as a top-up for what you carry, no cups (bring one), a bag drop, an event village with food and a non-alcoholic beer at the end. Mandatory kit is checked on the longer routes.
