What you’re in for
The shorter distances on Maverick's home course, from Burnbake just outside Corfe Castle in October, on the same day as the X-Trail. From the start you run steadily across the marsh towards the coast; the Half passes Old Harry Rocks and follows the Purbeck Way along the coastal ridge before the Hardy Way brings you back over Knowle Hill with Corfe Castle in view. The Short is 6.2km with 37m of climb, the Middle 11.7km and 76m, the Half 24.3km and 348m. Half at ten, Middle and Short at eleven. No outpost on the Short. Camping at the venue if you want to make a weekend of it.
Terrain and trail
Marsh and heath track at the start, then chalk ridge and clifftop path on the Half, with the climbs short and steep in the Purbeck way. The Short and Middle stay low and are genuinely easy ground. Firm underfoot most Octobers, slick on the chalk after rain. A trail shoe for the Half. Maverick's format on every event: a fully marked course, outposts stocked with Precision Fuel & Hydration and a spread of sweet and savoury food as a top-up for what you carry, no cups (bring one), a bag drop, an event village with food and a non-alcoholic beer at the end. Mandatory kit is checked on the longer routes.
