What you’re in for

Forty miles or twenty-seven along the Burnley Way from Finsley Gate Wharf: moorland, towpath and field in a loop round the town. The 40 Mile is 64.0km with 1,690m of climb, the Off-Road Marathon 43.0km with 1,347m. Late September.

Terrain and trail

Leeds & Liverpool towpath at the start and finish, then the moors: Pendle's flanks, the Hameldon moors and the Cliviger gorge, on peat, grass and stone. Marked, but the organiser still expects you to be able to navigate — carry the map. Wet on the tops in September. A trail shoe with grip.
