What you’re in for
The big day of the Wales end to end: 47 miles from Barmouth up the Mawddach estuary and over the Cambrian mountains to Llanidloes, on National Cycle Route 8 the whole way bar the last mile into town. Barmouth to Llanidloes: 75.8km, with eight checkpoints on the way. It is day 3 of the Wales end to end, and you can run it on its own or as part of the whole. The Mawddach Trail is the flat, beautiful start; after Dolgellau the route climbs into the hills of mid-Wales and stays high for most of the afternoon. Mount to Coast rules apply on the single day as on the series: preset cut-offs based on a minimum 4 mph average, a warning the first time you fall below it, and no one on the course after ten at night. Checkpoints roughly every eight miles, a tracker with an SOS button, and maps and GPX for entrants only — bring a map case.
Terrain and trail
National Cycle Route 8 — Lôn Las Cymru — the whole way, which means traffic-free cycle path, old railway and quiet lane, hard-surfaced almost throughout. Road shoes, as the organiser supplies. The difficulty is the distance and the hills of mid-Wales, not the ground.
