No reviews of the MTC LEJOG, and nothing on what people wore. Both are things no organiser publishes and every runner wants before they enter — how it actually went, and what was on your feet.

What you’re in for

Land's End to John o' Groats on foot, 854 miles in seventeen consecutive days, averaging more than fifty miles a day. Twelve places. The route is the Mount to Coast line the whole way — west Cornwall, Dartmoor's edge, the Severn, the Cheshire plain, Shap, the Borders, Drumochter and the Caithness coast — with a hotel at the end of every day. 1,374km. Preset cut-offs each day at a minimum 4 mph average: fall below it and you are warned, do it two days running and you are withdrawn without debate. Nothing on the course after ten at night. Checkpoints every eight miles or so from day one, trackers with SOS, maps and GPX for entrants only. The organiser says plainly that few people have the fitness or the resolve to finish, and the finisher list bears that out.

Terrain and trail

Road and cycle path almost throughout — the organiser supplies a pair of road shoes before the start, and advises trail shoes for about four miles on one day only. Every kind of British road there is: Cornish lanes, the Severn valley, the A6 over Shap, the old A9 through Drumochter. The ground is never the problem. Seventeen days is.
