What you’re in for
The last running of the Four Reservoirs, in October 2026 — the organiser is retiring it for a new ultra in 2027. From Shotley Bridge near Consett, the course climbs onto the moor above the town for four reservoirs, moorland ridges and the wooded Derwent gorge, on what the organiser rates the most scenic ultra in the north east. The 53km is 52.3km with 555m of climb, the 25km 25.4km and 287m. Start windows are 7:30 to 8:00 for the ultra and 9:00 to 9:30 for the 25km. It is run as a running event, not a walk — the organiser says so plainly.
Terrain and trail
Moorland track, reservoir path, old railway and woodland trail, with lane between. The reservoir paths and the railway path are firm and quick; the open moor is the wet, rough part, and October means it will be wet. The Derwent gorge sections are the steep ones. A trail shoe.
