What you’re in for
Wild Deer's home course, where their first event was held in 2019: a 5 Mile, a 10 Mile or a 15 Mile in Chopwell Woods on the edge of Gateshead, with a picnic afterwards. Three hundred and sixty hectares of Forestry England mixed woodland above the Derwent valley, next to Rowlands Gill. The 5 Mile is 8.1km with 146m of climb, the 10 Mile 16.3km and 292m, the 15 Mile 24.4km and 438m. For a wood that is a lot of climbing: the tracks contour and climb the valley side all the way round.
Terrain and trail
Forest track and woodland trail, well drained in summer, with roots, ruts and a few muddy hollows that never dry. The hills are real — long climbs on wide track and steeper drops on path. A trail shoe for the 10 Mile and 15 Mile.
