The course
What you’re in for
The Volcano is a 10.5-mile anticlockwise loop of south Dartmoor from Scoriton. It climbs over 550m, taking in Pupers Hill, Snowdon and Ryders Hill (the highest point of the southern moor) and the old china-clay spoil heap at Red Lake known as the Volcano. Expect three river crossings, a clapper bridge, two bogs, a long climb at the start and a long descent to finish. The course is fully marked and marshalled, with one aid station at about 6.3 miles. Feet will get wet, and after rain the Avon crossing can be knee-deep. The race starts at 10:30 from Scoriton Village Hall, with parking in a field nearby. The field is capped at 250, and there is a short mandatory kit list.
