What you’re in for

Two midwinter routes from Chagford take in the stone circles, rows and other prehistoric sites of north-east Dartmoor, dropping into the wooded valleys of the upper Teign and Bovey. Both run long: the marathon is over 28 miles with more than 1,500m of climb, and the half is over 14 miles with close to 700m. Expect wet, cold and short daylight. The marathon starts early at 8:30 to make the most of the light, carries GPS trackers and has four outdoor aid stations; the half starts at 11:00 with two. The kit list is a full winter one, including a headtorch and waterproof trousers for the marathon. Minimum ages are 20 for the marathon and 17 for the half.
