What you’re in for
These are late-afternoon winter races from Coastguards Beach at Mothecombe on the Erme estuary, finishing with a steep climb to the Schoolhouse restaurant. The Classic is 8.5 miles of estuary and woodland trail on the private Flete Estate, and it crosses the Erme twice, so expect wet feet from the start. The Erme & Hams Half adds about five miles of South Hams coast path. You have to reach the final estuary crossing within three hours or face a swim. The half starts at 12:45 and the Classic at 13:15, and both times can move by 15-20 minutes depending on weather and tide. Minimum ages are 16 for the Classic and 17 for the half.
