What you’re in for
Out of Durham from the bandstand on the riverside. The 55km follows the Wear through the city, joins the old railway line about three and a half miles in and heads north-west through Langley Park and Lanchester to Consett, then turns east onto the C2C towards Stanley and Chester-le-Street before the Wear brings it home. The 25km goes the other way: south along the railway path to Langley Moor and Meadowfield, through Croxdale and Butterby woods, and back along the river. The 55km is 57.9km with 460m of climb, the 25km 26.2km and 254m. The 55km has a hard rule: not at the final feed station by four o'clock and you are stopped. Everything is signed, with feed stations along the way.
Terrain and trail
Riverside path, railway path and cycleway for most of the distance, which is to say firm, fast and easy to run on for hours. The Lanchester Valley line climbs so gently you barely feel it, but it is uphill all the way to Consett, and the C2C section has the only sharper rises. Croxdale and Butterby woods on the 25km are the muddiest part. A road or light trail shoe.
