What you’re in for
Both distances start under the Swing Bridge on Newcastle Quayside. The 55km runs west along the Tyne to Wylam, crosses the river and comes back along the other bank to Derwenthaugh, then turns up the Derwent to High Spen, into Chopwell Woods and on to Lintzford, before dropping back to the Derwent Walk and the Tyne for the run in to the bridge. The 25km is the shorter riverside version. The 55km is 56.7km and the 25km 26.0km; the climb is in the Chopwell and High Spen section, and the rest is river. Three feed stations on the 55km, one on the 25km. Fully signed.
Terrain and trail
Riverside path and cycleway along the Tyne — Hadrian's Cycleway and the Keelmans Way — which is flat, firm and fast. The Derwent Walk is an old railway, gentle and gravelled. Chopwell Woods is the trail section: forest track and woodland path with real climbing, the one place on the route a trail shoe pays for itself.
