What you’re in for
A Wednesday-evening 5km or 10km in the National Trust's Gibside estate at Rowlands Gill — Wild Deer's closest venue to home, and one they get to themselves after the public have gone. Six hundred acres of designed eighteenth-century landscape: the chapel, the stable block, the ruined hall, the Column to Liberty above the trees, and deer if you look. The 5km is 5.1km with 112m of climb and the 10km 10.0km with 206m, which is a lot of climb for the distance. A midweek training race with a view.
Terrain and trail
Estate drives, woodland trail and grass, and hillier than a garden estate has any right to be — the paths climb from the river up to the column and back down. Firm in May. A light trail shoe, and expect the 10km to feel longer than it is.
