E4·T2 — how we grade routesYou get one of the prettiest stretches of the River Wharfe, the stepping stones and the hump-backed bridge at Burnsall, wrapped into a proper dale circuit rather than a quick there-and-back.
A 23km loop out of Burnsall in Wharfedale, linking riverside path with the fells and lanes above the dale. Around 520m of rolling climbing on mostly good ground beside the River Wharfe.
The route
Start in Burnsall, one of the classic Wharfedale villages, and drop to the river by the five-arched bridge. The route follows the Wharfe and the surrounding field paths and lanes for 23km, with around 520m of climbing in total. Most of it is runnable, but the repeated rises add up. This is Dales running at its most forgiving: green, rolling, and rarely far from the water.
Along the river
The River Wharfe is the thread that holds the loop together. Expect meadow paths, drystone walls, and the odd stepping-stone crossing, with Burnsall's stepping stones and the tearoom lawn as landmarks near the start and finish. The going is mostly firm underfoot, though the riverside meadows churn up after wet spells and can flood in winter, so check conditions before committing to the low path.
Why it works
This is a route to enjoy rather than survive. The climbing is spread out and never steep, the surface is friendly, and there is a village with cafes and a pub waiting at the end. It suits a steady long run, a first half-marathon distance off-road, or an easy day with company. Navigation is straightforward, following obvious paths and the line of the river, but the Dales weather can still turn, so pack a layer. Burnsall gets busy on summer weekends, and parking is genuinely tight now that the old village park has closed, so an early start pays off twice: quieter paths and a better chance of a space. Come back in autumn when the meadows gold up and the crowds thin, and this is close to a perfect Dales long run. It also links neatly with Grassington and the woods downstream if you want to stretch the distance out into a bigger day. The riverside line is flat enough to hold a steady rhythm, which makes it a good pick for a first long effort off the roads.
The riverside meadows flood in winter and churn to mud after rain, so the low path can be impassable in spate. Stepping-stone crossings are slick and best avoided when the Wharfe is high.
Leave No Trace
- Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but memories.
- Please respect the countryside and all its inhabitants.
- Dogs on leads near livestock, and around ground-nesting birds from March to July.
- Gates as you find them — open or closed, leave it that way for the farmer and the next runner.
- Take it all home — wrappers, peel, tissue, the lot. It doesn't count as biodegradable if you can still see it.
- Stick to the path where the ground either side is wet, planted, or nesting habitat.
