E2·T2 — how we grade routesYou get ancient ash woodland alive with birdsong and a return along one of the loveliest stretches of the River Wharfe, all from the doorstep of Grassington.
An 8.1km loop from Grassington through Grass Wood and back along the River Wharfe, one of the largest broadleaf woodlands in the Dales. Short, low and full of interest on riverside and woodland paths.
The route
Start in Grassington and head up the valley on the Dales Way towards Grass Wood, returning along the River Wharfe to close an 8.1km loop. It is a low, gentle route by Dales standards, with only modest climbing, but the ground is varied: grassy riverside meadow one moment, rocky woodland path the next. It makes an ideal short outing or an easy leg-stretcher when you do not want the fells.
Grass Wood
Grass Wood is one of the largest areas of broadleaf woodland in the Yorkshire Dales, a nature reserve of ancient ash, limestone outcrop and spring flowers. In April and May it comes alive with woodland birds like wood warbler, pied flycatcher and redstart, and roe deer move quietly through the quieter corners. The paths climb and twist among the rocks, so it is more interesting underfoot than a river path has any right to be, before you drop back to the Wharfe for the return.
Why it works
This is a route to savour rather than race. The distance is short, the navigation is simple on clear paths, and the mix of river and wood keeps it engaging throughout. It suits an easy day, a run with family, or a first off-road loop in Wharfedale, and Grassington at the start has everything you need, from cafes to toilets to parking. The woodland paths can be rocky and slick when wet or icy, so pick your footing, and the riverside meadows hold water after rain. Come in spring for the flowers and birdsong, or in autumn for the colour in the canopy, and this modest loop earns its place. It also links easily into a longer day up the dale if you want more, with Kilnsey and Conistone within easy reach along the valley.
The woodland paths are rocky and steep in places and get slick when wet or icy. The riverside meadows hold water after rain, and the Wharfe should not be underestimated when high.
