What you’re in for
The Beyond series takes a city and gets you out of it on foot. Bristol's starts at the Amphitheatre on the harbourside, follows the Avon through the centre and picks up the Frome Valley Way out through Eastville Park, then more than 10km of the Bristol and Bath Railway Path. The River Avon Trail brings you back west under the Clifton Suspension Bridge, up through Leigh Woods and over the bridge into Clifton for the run back to the harbour. The 55km is 52.2km with 343m of climb; the 25km is 23.5km and 250m on a shorter version of the same ground. Both use a staggered start in small groups. It is a long day on easy surfaces rather than a hard one — the climb through Leigh Woods to the bridge is the only real hill.
Terrain and trail
Riverside path, old railway line, park and woodland trail, with city pavement to join them up. Almost all of it is firm and fast: the railway path is tarmac, the river trails are compacted gravel. Leigh Woods is the one stretch of proper trail, rooty and steep for a few hundred metres. Fully signed and supported with feed stations; a road or light trail shoe.
